OET Writing, marked

Referral letters scored on all 6 official Writing criteria, with inline annotations.

What nurses get

Built around the scenarios nurses actually face.

A community nurse explaining post-op care to a recently discharged patient who is reluctant to start their physiotherapy exercises.

Nursing role-plays

Cases generated against a nursing topic schema — diabetes counselling, post-op handover, wound care and infection screening.

Every OET criterion, scored

Intelligibility, fluency, appropriateness, grammar, empathy, patient perspective, structure, gathering, giving — plus a 0–500 overall and an A–E grade.

Pronunciation diagnostics

Industry-grade pronunciation analysis surfaces the specific words that hurt your score — including the clinical vocabulary nurses say every day.

Cue verification per task

Each role-card has 4–5 tasks. We verify each one against your transcript with the exact quote you used — hit, partial, or miss.

Targets nurses' weak spots

Most nurses lose marks in the same places: understanding the patient perspective, providing structure, information giving (jargon control). The recommender targets these criteria first.

Nursing Writing letters, marked

Write a nursing referral letter against a profession-specific case, then get it scored on all six official OET Writing criteria — with inline annotations and band-5 + band-7 model answers.

What each board asks for

You may not need Grade B in all four.

Almost every prep site tells nurses they need Grade B in all four sub-tests. For several of the largest destinations that is simply not true, and believing it costs candidates a re-sit they never needed. Here is what each board actually asks for.

OET grade required by each nursing regulator, per sub-test

Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC)
Writing is C+ (300–340), not B. Scores may also be combined across two sittings.

  • Grade C+ is 300–340 on the 0–500 scale; Grade B is 350–440.
  • The NMC will combine scores across two OET sittings rather than making you clear all four in one go, and will accept OET@Home combined with a paper or computer sitting. The gap allowed between the two sittings has been six months and the NMC has announced an extension to twelve, so check the current guidance before you plan a re-sit around it. Sit the Nursing version of the test, not a general one.
  • Requirements move. Every row here reflects what the board published when this page was compiled — confirm with your own regulator before you book, because a board that raises its threshold will not refund your sitting.

Phrase bank

Four phrases worth drilling.

Internalise these and you'll have go-to language for the moments that matter most in migrating nurses' consultations.

Empathic opener

That sounds really difficult — can I check I understand what you mean?

Signposting

Before we get into that, I'd like to ask a few questions about your symptoms.

Comprehension check

Just to make sure I've explained that clearly — what would you tell your daughter about it?

Closing

Before you go, is there anything else on your mind?

Now scoring OET Writing

Not just Speaking — OET Writing for nurses, too.

Write a nursing referral letter against a profession-specific case — timed under exam conditions, or untimed with hints and model answers — and get it marked on all six official OET Writing criteria. Inline annotations show the phrases that cost you marks, and band-5 + band-7 sample answers show the next band up. There is no word-count penalty: length is judged only through relevance and summarising.

FAQ

What nurses ask most often.

What OET score do nurses need for the UK NMC?
Grade B (350+) in Listening, Reading and Speaking, and Grade C+ (300–340) in Writing. The lower Writing threshold is the standing requirement, not a concession you have to argue for. The NMC will also combine scores across two sittings rather than making you clear all four at once. Confirm the current thresholds on the NMC website before booking.
Do all nursing regulators require Grade B in every sub-test?
No, and assuming so is what sends candidates into re-sits they did not need. Australia (NMBA), Ireland (NMBI) and Singapore do ask for B across all four. The UK NMC and the Nursing Council of New Zealand accept C+ in Writing. Canadian provincial colleges typically want B in Listening and Speaking with C+ in Reading and Writing. Most US state boards sit at C+ across all four. Check your own board before you set a target.
Is AHPRA strict about Grade B in Speaking specifically?
Yes. The Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia, AHPRA and the Department of Home Affairs all require Grade B (350+) in all four sub-tests, Speaking included. Australia is the strictest of the major destinations on this point — there is no Writing concession of the kind the UK NMC allows.
Can I practice as a nurse while my OET is pending?
Most regulators require valid OET evidence before granting full registration. Some allow conditional/temporary registration for nurses with employer sponsorship, but the OET deadline still applies. Confirm with your specific regulator.
