Free OET sample test

A free OET practice test you can take now, and get scored.

Most OET sample tests are PDFs: you read them, but nobody marks your Speaking or your letter. This one runs a real Speaking role-play against an AI patient and scores it on all nine OET criteria about a minute after you finish. Writing letters are marked on all six. Free to start, no card.

How the Speaking practice test works

  1. Step 1
Pick your profession and a case

Nursing, medicine and ten more. Each case is a candidate card with a setting, your role and the tasks to cover.

  2. Step 2
Read the card, then run the role-play out loud

Up to five minutes with an AI patient who has their own brief. Use headphones and a quiet room, as you would on test day.

  3. Step 3
Get scored about a minute later

All nine criteria, with the exact lines that cost you marks quoted back from the transcript.

A sample OET Speaking card

Acute Lower Back Pain & ED Wait

Setting: Emergency Department. Your role: Emergency Department Nurse

Mr. Daniel Carter, a 54-year-old long-distance driver, has been waiting in the Emergency Department for several hours with acute lower back pain. He is becoming visibly frustrated with the delay. Your role is to assess his condition, provide a preliminary explanation of his pain, and manage his expectations regarding the wait time.

  1. Greet Mr. Carter, acknowledge his wait, and confirm the acute lower back pain he presented with.
  2. Gather a focused history of his lower back pain, including onset, character, radiation (e.g., down the leg), aggravating/alleviating factors, and any associated symptoms (e.g., numbness, weakness, bladder/bowel changes).
  3. Clarify any initial triage findings regarding his pain and mobility, and explain the need for further physical assessment or imaging by a doctor.
  4. Explain the probable causes of acute lower back pain in his situation (e.g., muscle strain from prolonged driving, disc issue) and outline the immediate ED plan, including pain management and further diagnostic steps.
  5. Confirm his understanding of his condition and the ongoing ED process, addressing his frustration about the wait and setting realistic expectations for when he will be seen by a doctor.

More cards, eight per profession, are on the OET Speaking role-play cards page. You can print them or run each one live.

OET sample tests for all four sub-tests

Common questions

Is this OET practice test free?

Yes. Every new account gets 1 full exam role-play scored on all nine Speaking criteria, plus 10 minutes of Coach mode, with no card. Writing practice is not metered. Paid plans add more Speaking practice time.

Is this the official OET sample test?

No. OET Live is independent and not affiliated with OET or Cambridge Boxhill Language Assessment. The role-plays come from our own case bank and follow the official format: a candidate card, a patient or carer who has their own brief, and the nine published Speaking criteria. Official free sample tests for all four sub-tests are on oet.com.

Does it cover all four OET sub-tests?

It covers Speaking and Writing, the two sub-tests that need someone to mark you. Listening and Reading are multiple choice and short answer, so OET’s own free sample papers with their answer keys already let you mark yourself.

How close is it to the real OET Speaking test?

The structure is the same: read a card, then run a role-play of up to five minutes with someone who only knows their side of the case. The other side is an AI patient that improvises from its own brief, so it pushes back, asks questions and gets things wrong the way a person does. Scores are an estimate on the OET scale, not an official result.

Can I take it on Windows, Android or a Chromebook?

Yes. It runs in any modern browser with a microphone. On iPhone you can use the browser or the app; one account works on both.

Which professions does it cover?

All twelve OET professions. The bank holds 28,000+ role-plays written for nursing, medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, physiotherapy and the rest.

A sample test only helps if someone marks it. Take one now.
