OET Speaking role-play cards

Role-play cards you can actually practise, not just read

An OET Speaking role-play gives each side a one-page card. Yours sets the scene and lists your tasks; the interlocutor holds a different one, which you do not see. For the official format and real exam material, see oet.com. The cards below are from our own practice bank.

How to use one: read the setting, your role and each task, then say the conversation out loud with a partner or record yourself. Reading a card silently does not rehearse how you sound or how you pace the tasks.

Cards from OET Live’s own practice bank — written for practice, not official OET material.

Bereavement Support for Daughter After Mother's Passing

Setting: Hospital ward. Your role: Ward Nurse

You are speaking with Ms Laura Bennett, daughter of Mrs Joan Bennett, who passed away peacefully in the ward last night at 82 years old. Ms Bennett is visibly distressed and has approached you with practical questions, but also seems to need emotional support.

  1. Acknowledge the profound loss of Ms. Bennett's mother, Mrs. Joan Bennett, directly and without minimising the impact of her recent passing.
  2. Permit Ms. Bennett to express her emotions freely, maintaining a supportive presence and offering silence rather than immediate solutions.
  3. Answer any practical questions Ms. Bennett raises regarding immediate arrangements, such as contacting the funeral director or collecting personal belongings, briefly and concretely.
  4. Offer specific resources like the hospital's bereavement counselling service and details for a local grief support group named 'Hope's Anchor', explaining their purpose.
  5. Leave the door open for future support by suggesting a follow-up phone call in two days or another meeting on the ward next week, providing a specific contact method.

Antenatal screening choices

Antenatal Screening: Modesty Request

Setting: Local medical clinic. Your role: Doctor

Chloe Evans, a 31-year-old fitness instructor, is 12 weeks pregnant and has an appointment to discuss her antenatal screening choices. She is particularly interested in the combined screening for chromosomal conditions but has expressed a specific request regarding the gender of the sonographer for her upcoming ultrasound.

  1. Listen carefully to Ms. Evans' request for a female sonographer for her 12-week combined screening ultrasound, ensuring you understand her primary concern.
  2. Understand the cultural and personal modesty considerations that underpin Ms. Evans' request, showing empathy and non-judgment.
  3. Assess the clinical feasibility of accommodating Ms. Evans' request for a female sonographer within the clinic's current scheduling and resources, considering the optimal 11-14 week window for combined screening.
  4. Propose a practical accommodation or compromise, such as exploring availability at another local clinic, offering a chaperone, or adjusting scheduling, while clearly explaining any potential implications for the timing or process of the combined screening.
  5. Confirm with Ms. Evans that the proposed solution is acceptable to her, addressing both her cultural needs and her desire to undergo comprehensive antenatal screening.

Leg pain from sciatica

Sciatica Follow-up: New Parent

Setting: Outpatient physiotherapy clinic. Your role: Physiotherapist

Olivia Brown, a 26-year-old new parent, is returning for a follow-up appointment regarding her sciatica, which presents as shooting leg pain and lower back discomfort. You previously prescribed gentle exercises and pain management strategies. This consultation focuses on assessing her response to the previous plan and adjusting it as needed.

  1. Assess Olivia's response to the previous plan, specifically noting changes in the intensity and frequency of her shooting leg pain and lower back discomfort.
  2. Review symptom changes and what Olivia has noticed in the interval, particularly regarding activities like lifting her baby and any specific triggers or relief measures.
  3. Adjust the exercise regimen or pain management advice if needed, for instance, by modifying pelvic tilt exercises or suggesting specific body mechanics for childcare, sharing clear reasoning with Olivia.
  4. Reinforce what worked well in the previous plan, such as effective stretches or resting positions, encouraging Olivia to maintain these beneficial behaviours.
  5. Schedule a next review appointment in 2-3 weeks to monitor her progress and address any further concerns, ensuring the timing is practical for a new parent.

Common questions

What is an OET Speaking role-play card?

A one-page brief for a Speaking role-play. The candidate’s card sets the scene and lists the tasks to cover; the interlocutor holds a different card. The candidate does not see it, so what matters has to come out through the conversation. For the official format, see oet.com.

How do I use a card to practise?

Read the setting, your role and each task, then say the conversation out loud with a partner or record yourself. Reading a card silently does not rehearse how you sound or how you pace the tasks.

Are these the official OET cards?

No. They are cards from OET Live’s own practice bank, written for practice and not official OET material. For the official format and exam material, see oet.com.

Why is there no page for each individual card?

Each card is a section on its profession’s page instead of a page of its own, so a profession’s cards can be read and compared in one place.

A card is a script until someone answers it. Practise it live.

The app runs a live role-play against an AI role-player and scores it about a minute after you finish. Every card's button takes you to OET Live on the App Store, not to the card itself. In the app, search the topic shown on the card under Practice.
